The Idaho State Tax Commission, along with the IRS, starts processing 2020 income tax returns Friday, February 12. The filing deadline is Thursday, April 15.

Preparing your return. Just starting your taxes? See if you can prepare and e-file both your Idaho and federal income tax returns for free using tax software: tax.idaho.gov/freefile. Nearly 600,000 Idahoans qualify.

Filing. E-filing is the safest and easiest method.

Refunds. E-filing and choosing direct deposit is the fastest way to get a refund. The Tax Commission might ask you to verify your identity or provide more information before it issues a refund. It takes seven to eight weeks to get a refund when you e-file versus 10 to 11 weeks when filing by paper. The best way to check your refund status 24/7 is at tax.idaho.gov/refund.

Taxes owed. You can easily pay at tax.idaho.gov/quickpay. Quick Pay lets you make one big payment or multiple smaller ones. Pay the whole amount by April 15 to avoid interest and any penalty.
