Idaho State Tax Commission

Watch out for tax mailing scams targeting businesses

We’re alerting taxpayers to two new scams after some businesses received a “Notice” in the mail demanding payment of Idaho taxes.  One mailing was a notice to levy and seize property. The other mailing was a notice to levy Social Security benefits.

The mailings claim to be from the State of Idaho’s “Tax Processing Unit Internal Processing Service – Fairfax County Public Judgment Records” and its “Benefits Suspensions Unit – Ada County Public Records Judgment.” The units don’t exist. The fraudulent letters threaten action unless payment arrangements are made quickly.

These are similar to other scams the Idaho State Tax Commission has come across that use the county where the targeted taxpayer lives as the location of the fraudulent tax unit. Scammers try to make the mailing seem more official. But in several cases, the “counties” named actually are in other states!

If you’re concerned about the legitimacy of a tax document you receive, please call the Tax Commission – not the phone number provided in the mailing – and verify that it’s from us. You can call us at (208) 334-7660 in the Boise area or toll free at (800) 972-7660.
