Latest Scam: "Unlocking" Tax Professionals' Tax Software Accounts
A phishing email scam targets tax professionals by impersonating software providers.
The scam subject line reads "Access Locked" and warns recipients that their tax preparation software accounts are suspended due to errors in security details. If the link to "unlock" the account is clicked on, it takes recipients to a fake webpage and requires their username and password. Instead of unlocking accounts, the tax professionals unwittingly provide their information to cybercriminals who use it to access the preparer's accounts and steal client information.
Tax professionals can review additional tips to protect clients and themselves at the Security Summit's awareness campaign, Protect Your Clients, Protect Yourself, on IRS.gov. The Security Summit includes the IRS, state tax agencies, and the nation's tax community.
