What you can do without a TAP account

TAP is a free, secure, convenient way to file and pay many tax returns. Learn more about TAP.

Here are things you can do without registering for a TAP account:

Register with TAP

  1. On the TAP home page, click "Don't have a logon? Register here" beneath the "Log In" button.
  2. Leave "No" selected where you're asked if you received a code. Click "Next."
  3. Fill in all the required fields. If a field turns red/pink, hover over it to see the error and correct it. (Call the efile Help Desk at (208) 332-6632 if you're unable to correct the fields in error.)
    1. For the "You Are" field, use the drop-down arrow to select:
      - BUSINESS if you're an owner or employee of a business (but not the sole owner)
      - INDIVIDUAL if you're an individual managing your own taxes
      - SOLE PROPRIETOR if you're the sole owner of a business
      - 3RD PARTY TAX PROFESSIONAL if you're a tax preparer or accountant managing your clients' taxes
  4. Click "Submit." We'll send you a letter. This letter has a registration code. When you receive your letter, return to the TAP home page and click "Don't have a logon? Register here" beneath the "Log In" button.
  5. Click on "Yes" to indicate that you have a registration code, then click "Next."
  6. On the "Verify" page:
    1. Enter the registration code exactly the way it appears in your letter (it is case sensitive)
    2. Select the option under "You Are" that matches the selection you made during your pre-registration
    3. Enter the EIN or SSN that you used during your pre-registration
    4. Click "Next"
    5. Complete the required fields
    6. Banking information is optional during the registration process, and you can add this later if you prefer
    7. Click "Submit"

You now have full access to your TAP account.

  • If you don't receive a letter within five business days after your request was successfully submitted, contact us at or call (208) 332-6632.

File a return in TAP

  1. Click on the tax type link in the Accounts area for the return you want to file.
  2. Click on the File Return link next to the period you want to file.
  3. Enter your return information.
  4. Click submit.
  5. Review your entries and your total amount due. Click "Okay".
  6. You'll see a confirmation screen which can be printed by clicking the Print button.

A return is on time if it's submitted by 11:59 p.m., Mountain Time (MT).

If you're filing a withholding 910, click on the tax period you want to file for and then click "Make a payment" under I Want To. Read more about withholding 910 "zero" returns.

You can file your return before the due date and schedule your payment up to 90 days before the due date. Just change the payment date. Enter the preferred date using the MM/DD/YY format or click the calendar button and choose the date from the calendar.

Make a payment in TAP

You aren't limited to the number of payments you can make in TAP, even for the same tax type and period.

Make a payment for YOUR ACCOUNT:

  1. Under the Accounts tab, click on the tax type of the account you want to make a payment on.
  2. Click on the period link.
  3. Under I Want To, click Make a payment.
  4. If there's no default bank information, you can add it now or select from the accounts shown under "Payment Channel."
  5. Save the payment channel for future use if you want this account to default to this banking information in the future.
  6. Enter the Payment Type, Payment Date, and Amount.
  7. Click Submit.
  8. Authorize your payment by clicking "Okay."
  9. You'll see a confirmation screen which can be printed by clicking the Print button.
  10. You'll receive an email confirmation once the payment begins processing.

Make a payment for YOUR CLIENT'S ACCOUNT:

  1. Under the Individuals and Businesses tab, click on your client's account.
  2. Follow steps 1-10 from the instructions above.

A payment is on time if it's submitted by 11:59 p.m., Mountain Time (MT).

Choose how to apply your payment

You can make estimated payments, account payments, audit payments, and more.

  1. Click Make Payment or Make a payment.
  2. In the Payment area, use the drop-down field to choose your preferred Payment Type. For example, if you want to make a payment on an audit, choose "Audit" from the drop-down under "Payment Type."

There are different choices for each tax type.

Note: If you don't have a TAP account, you can still make payments using Quick Pay.
