Cybercriminals or Legitimate Clients?

In a recent email, the IRS warned that cybercriminals have new and clever email schemes where they pose as clients soliciting tax professional’s services.

These latest phishing emails come in typically two stages.

  • The solicitation, "I need a preparer to file my taxes."
  • The second email typically has either an embedded web address or contains a PDF attachment that has an embedded web address.

Tax professionals may think they’re downloading a potential client's tax information. In reality, the cybercriminals are collecting the preparer's email address and password and possibly other information.

The IRS urges tax professionals and tax preparation firms to consider creating internal policies or obtain security experts' recommendations on how to address unsolicited emails seeking their services. [Read more.]

TIP: Never respond to or click on a link in an unsolicited email or PDF attachment from an unknown sender.

New Phishing Scheme Targets Tax Pros

The IRS and the Security Summit partners continue to see new e-mail phishing schemes emerge, and remind tax professionals to be on the lookout for these scams as tax season approaches.

The Security Summit effort just identified a new email phishing scheme targeting numerous tax professionals with the subject line "Mails on Hold!".

Emails may:

  • Appear to be from the IRS or e-services
  • Include references to such things as IRS personnel or PTINs

The IRS and Security Summit partners strongly urge people not to click on the links or attachments contained in these emails.

If you are a victim of an e-services scam, please contact the e-services helpdesk at (866) 255-0654 and report the incident to the FTC and TIGTA.

Changes to 2016 income tax booklet mailing

If you were expecting to receive a 2016 income tax booklet from us, please be aware of some changes. The Tax Commission will be mailing 2016 tax booklets only to taxpayers who filed a paper return last year using a tax form from our booklet or website. Taxpayers who e-filed their return last year or filed a paper form generated though a tax software package won’t automatically receive a booklet. However, they can download income tax forms and instructions from our website. And they can order the booklet through the website.
