Frequently Asked Questions

Heir Finders (UCPH)

UCPH - 1 What is an heir finder?

An heir finder is a company or individual who can assist the owner of unclaimed property with locating and claiming funds. Heir finders charge a fee, usually a percentage of the value of the property recovered, for their assistance. The state of Idaho’s Unclaimed Property Office provides this service free of charge.

UCPH - 5 Do any of the unclaimed property lists available to the public disclose the property values?

No. We do not disclose the exact value of the unclaimed property to anyone in an effort to protect owner confidentiality and to discourage heir finders from targeting owners with large dollar property values.

Contact us if you need more information.

UCPH - 6 What does the Better Business Bureau advise consumers about heir finders?

According to the Better Business Bureau, consumers should be suspicious if an heir finder wants money before they deliver the property or if the fee is not based on a percentage of the money to be returned. If you have concerns about an heir finder or locator, contact your Better Business Bureau or Idaho’s Unclaimed Property Office.
