GO ONLINE TO CLAIM LOST MONEY
BOISE, IDAHO — Aug. 18, 2009 — Claiming lost money in Idaho just got easier. The Idaho Tax Commission has launched a new online claim service for unclaimed property through its Web site at tax.idaho.gov.
Unclaimed property includes lost assets like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, utility deposits, traveler’s checks, contents from deposit boxes, and other money, according to the Tax Commission, which currently holds more than $51 million in unclaimed property for Idaho.
Claims made online are processed faster than paper claims. You can receive a check two weeks sooner by making an online claim instead of a paper claim. The online claim is also easier to fill out. And the free online service keeps your information confidential.
“Look at the unclaimed property list on our Web site to see if you have property that belongs to you or your relatives,” said Cozette Walters-Swanson, manager of the Tax Commission’s Unclaimed Property Program. “If you’re on the list, submit a claim online to get your money even faster than before.”
Walters-Swanson suggested people check the list from time to time. “Every day we update the unclaimed property list with more abandoned money,” she said. “Last month we added more than $600,000.”
