TAXPAYERS CAN GET EXTENSION TO FILE IDAHO INCOME TAXES, BUT NOT EXTENSION TO PAY
BOISE,
IDAHO — April 4, 2008 — If you can’t file your 2007 Idaho state income taxes by April 15, you may be eligible to get an automatic, six-month extension without filing a form.
In order to qualify, you need to pay either an estimated 80 percent of your 2007 tax liability or 100 percent of what you paid for state income taxes the year before (on your 2006 tax return) by Tuesday, April 15. You can avoid a penalty for late filing, but will be charged 7 percent interest annually on the remaining tax until it’s paid. Complete the worksheet on Idaho Form 51, Estimated Payment of Idaho Income Tax, to see if you meet the extension requirements.
If you need to make a payment to avoid a penalty, you can mail Form 51 with your check or money order, make a credit card payment by mail using a Credit Card Payment Voucher, or make an online credit card payment through the Idaho State Tax Commission Web site at tax.idaho.gov (click on “Electronic Payments”). Form 51 and the Credit Card Payment Voucher are available in the 2007 Idaho income tax packet or on the Web site.
If you qualify for an extension to file your Idaho return, you must send the return and any payment by Oct. 15. For more information, call the Tax Commission at (800) 972-7660 toll free, or 334-7660 in the Boise area.
