Tax Commission News Release
Scan lines change to protect your identity
BOISE, IDAHO — Jan. 22, 2013 — As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard taxpayer information, the Idaho State Tax Commission has changed all preprinted tax returns and payment vouchers it mails that have a scan line (line of numbers) printed at the bottom of the forms.
Effective Jan. 1, 2013, all Social Security numbers (SSNs) and federal Employer Identification Numbers (EINs) were replaced in the scan lines with a unique Tax Commission account number. Without affecting the accounts, the change ensures that SSNs or EINs aren’t visible on returns or payment vouchers that are mailed from Tax Commission offices.
The scan line updates include all tax types and business correspondence. “Fighting fraud and identity theft has become a large part of our new business procedures,” said Doreen Warren, the Tax Commission’s revenue operations division administrator. “It’s just doing the right thing.”
For more information, call the Tax Commission at (800) 972-7660 toll free or 334-7660 in the Boise area.
