Filing Individual Income Taxes Online

If you choose to e-file, you must use the same provider to file both your federal and state returns.

Note: The Idaho State Tax Commission does not endorse the following companies, products, or services. The companies listed on this page offer different levels of service, so you may want to look carefully at each provider to see which free filing offers you qualify for. If you have technical difficulties while using these products, please contact that company’s help desk or technical support.

Free electronic filing

The state of Idaho has partnered with software developers and the IRS to provide selected groups of taxpayers with free electronic filing. To see if you qualify for free filing, please read the information below and click on the company name to view their software.

Be sure to use the links on this page to use the free services offered. Otherwise, you may be assessed fees or charges by these companies.

  • MyFreeTaxes, offers free federal and Idaho tax online preparation and e-file if for tax year 2012 you meet the following:
    • Have adjusted gross income (AGI) of $57,000 or less
    • Have an email address
    • Have a valid SSN or ITIN to file
    • Don't have foreign income reported on a 1040 NR (but foreign investments through a mutual fund reported on a 1099 are fine)
      Note: If you've used H&R BLock tax software before, you'll need to create a new username and password.
      Also: You can call toll free 1-855-MYTXHELP (855-698-9435) 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. (ET) Monday through Saturday or email customerservice@myfreetaxes.com with questions.
  • 1040NOW, offers free federal and Idaho tax online preparation and e-file if for tax year 2012 you meet the following:
    • Have adjusted gross income (AGI) of $32,000 or less, or
    • Qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), or
    • Are active duty military with an AGI of $57,000 or less.
  • Intuit Tax Freedom Project, offers free online tax preparation and e-file if in tax year 2012 you meet one of the following:
    • Have adjusted gross income (AGI) of $31,000 or less, or
    • Have adjusted gross income (AGI) of $57,000 or less and served active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard), or
    • Qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
  • Online Taxes at OLT.com offers free federal and free state online tax preparation and e-filing.
    • Any age, if
    • Your federal adjusted gross income is between $12,050 and $57,000
  • H&R Block's Free File, offers free federal and Idaho state online tax preparation if for tax year 2012 you meet the following:
    • Have Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $57,000 or less, and
    • Age 52 or younger.
  • TaxHawk.com offers to e-file your Idaho state and federal taxes for free if:
    • Adjusted gross income is $57,000 or less, and
    • Age is between 23 and 65 (on 12/31/2012).
  • TaxACT offers free federal and Idaho filing for 2012 if:
    • Adjusted gross income (AGI) is $51,000 or less and
    • Age is between 18 and 57 years old.
  • TaxSlayer.com offers free federal and one state if:
    • Federal AGI is $30,000 or less.
