HELPFUL HINTS FOR FILING PAPER INCOME TAX RETURNS

When Filing Paper Returns:

  1. Make sure the copies of wage and tax statements (W-2s)  you attach are readable.

  2. Verify your social security number (SSN) and be sure it matches your W-2s and is clearly written on the form. The IRS uses the Social Security Administration's database to validate tax returns. If your name, SSN, and birth date do not match the database, your tax return will be returned for correction and you'll have to visit the Social Security Administration's office.

  3. If you are filing Forms 40 or 43 you must attach a copy of your federal return and schedules.

  4. Make sure you take the right standard deduction and tax table amount for the filing status you are claiming.

  5. One of the most common holdups we see is caused by simple addition and subtraction errors. Please check your math.

  6. Unsigned returns are the other most common cause for delay.

  7. Deductions and credits generally require you to complete and attach additional schedules. Read these instructions to be sure you qualify and then attach the appropriate schedules.
