Electronic Filing

HELPFUL HINTS FOR FILING YOUR TAXES ONLINE

Computer software is a great tool for providing the right form and doing calculations for taxpayers. However, the software will not always provide technical advice or advise you of certain deductions that may only be appropriate on your federal or state return. You should not expect the software to provide all of the knowledge you need to complete your return.
  1. If you claim a capital gain on your federal return, you need to verify that the property qualifies for the Idaho capital gains deduction. The software may automatically create Idaho Form CG. You'll need to review the instructions for Idaho Form CG for qualifying property. (Note: Gains from the sale of securities, including stocks, bonds and money market funds, do not qualify for the Idaho capital gains deduction.)

  2. When completing Forms 1099 do not enter your Idaho income tax withholding from your wage and tax statements. Idaho does not generally require those who issue 1099s to withhold Idaho income taxes.

  3. If you had a name change during the year you must notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) prior to filing your return. Your return will not be accepted for electronic filing if your name and social security number (SSN) do not match their records.

  4. Idaho deductions for federal interest and other special credits may not always be computed by the software. You should review each of these deductions and credits to take advantage of them.
